Program Cuts Passed—But Not Without Pushback

Yesterday, VIU’s Senate debated and voted on two motions—one to cancel and another to suspend several academic programs. The cancellations, including the Master of Community Planning and the Dental Assistant programs, were approved. The suspension proposals were not passed, largely due to concerns about the accuracy of information—especially around the Philosophy program—which will now return to the Planning and Priorities Committee for further review.

We understand that VIU, like many institutions, is navigating serious financial challenges. But even in difficult circumstances, students deserve a seat at the table when decisions that impact their education, future plans, and academic community are being made.

The Senate meeting made clear the emotional and political weight of these decisions. Administrators expressed concern that separating or amending motions could delay the changes, while faculty, staff, and students shared the real and personal consequences that these program cuts will have. The room was tense, and the stakes were high.

What stood out, however, was the impact of student advocacy.

Student Senators played a critical role in questioning proposals, pushing for improved governance processes, highlighting inaccuracies, and calling for transparency. It was through their efforts—alongside faculty allies—that some proposals were challenged and sent back for further scrutiny. These actions demonstrate how essential it is to have informed, active student voices present in decision-making spaces.

In recent months, we’ve also seen encouraging signs of change. The administration has acknowledged the importance of student involvement and has taken steps to include student representatives in more governance discussions. While this shift is still developing, it reflects the work of student leaders who have continued to advocate—persistently and constructively—for a more transparent and inclusive decision-making culture.

That’s where our focus remains:

  • Ensuring students are fully informed about how these decisions are unfolding.

  • Holding institutional leadership accountable to principles of good governance.

  • Continuing to push for student inclusion earlier in every major academic and financial planning process.

We want to be clear:

We support responsible, sustainable planning.

We recognize the supports being made available to impacted students.

And we will continue to push for increased student participation in the governance process at VIU.

If you're a student in a program affected by these changes or have concerns about what they mean for your future, please reach out to us at action@viusu.ca. We’re here to support you, advocate alongside you, and ensure student voices remain central in shaping what comes next.
