current campaigns

The Students’ Union prides itself on its past successes as well as the successes of our provincial students’ union (the BCFS) in advocating on behalf of members, including the 2020 creation of the BC Access Grant, $3.26 million in funding for BCcampus for the development of open education resources (OERs), the elimination of interest on BC student loans, tuition free adult basic education reinstated in BC, the elimination of the sale of bottled water at VIU and the 2% cap on tuition fee increases in BC, which has been in effect for over a decade and a half.

Cuts Suck. Fix Education.

The Cuts Suck campaign is about pushing back against underfunding, service reductions, and program cuts that harm students’ education and campus life. The goal is to hold governments and institutions accountable for providing the resources students need to succeed.

Students can take action by visiting cutssuck.ca to send a message to decision-makers, share their experiences, and join the fight to stop cuts and secure proper funding for post-secondary education.

we matter here

Goal: We’re working to improve how things work at Vancouver Island University. That means holding decision-makers accountable, demanding transparency, making sure students have a real voice in decisions that affect them, and fighting to protect and sustain the services students rely on.

We’re not here for vague promises—we want action. Learn more at wematterhere.viusu.ca.

rise up

Goals: We are calling on the BC government to…
• Freeze and gradually reduce tuition fees
• Increase funding for the BC Access Grant
• Limit international student tuition hikes to 2% annually
• Invest $500M annually in post-secondary operational funding

Action: Students are invited to share their stories, email decision-makers, and join the movement to build momentum for change.

open textbooks now!

The Open Textbooks Now campaign is focused on making education more affordable by expanding the use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) — free, accessible, and high-quality alternatives to costly textbooks. The goal is to reduce financial barriers for students while encouraging faculty and institutions to adopt OERs in more courses.

Students can take action by sending a letter to their professors using our template and google form. We’ll deliver the letters in December 2025. Share your story and show support for open, affordable learning materials!
