Annual General Meeting Recap: Financial Transparency, Accountability, and a Year of Student-Led Impact

Thank you to all the members who joined us for the Vancouver Island University Students’ Union’s 2025 Annual General Meeting! The AGM is one of the most important moments in our governance calendar—a chance for students to directly engage with the work of their Students’ Union, ask questions, and help shape the direction of the year ahead.

Here’s a quick recap of the key decisions and discussions from this year’s meeting.

Review of the Audited Financial Statements

Members reviewed the audited financial statements for the 2024–25 fiscal year. These statements provide a clear snapshot of how student fees are invested into services, events, advocacy, and long-term projects that support the VIU community.

The independent audit once again confirmed that VIUSU is operating responsibly, transparently, and in full compliance with all financial and governance requirements. This annual review is a cornerstone of our commitment to accountability and ensures that every dollar is used to advance students’ interests.

Appointment of Auditor for 2025–26

Members voted to appoint an external auditor for the 2025–26 fiscal year. Selecting an independent auditor is an essential part of upholding good governance and financial stewardship, ensuring that students continue to receive clear and trustworthy reporting about how their Students’ Union operates.

Presentation of the Annual Report

The Executive Committee also presented the 2024–25 Annual Report—our comprehensive overview of the past year’s achievements, challenges, and student-driven outcomes. Highlights included:

  • Expanded student advocacy campaigns, including We Matter Here, the push for improved library hours, and progress on the new student-owned building initiative.

  • Growth in student services, from the Breakfast Bar to the Grants Program.

  • A vibrant lineup of events, workshops, clubs programming, and community-building initiatives.

  • Strategic governance decisions, including updates to the VIUSU Endowment Fund that doubled the value of annual student awards.

The report reflects a year of student empowerment, stronger systems, and meaningful wins across campus—driven by thousands of student voices and the work of the Board of Directors, committees, and staff team.

Members had the opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and engage directly with this work, reinforcing VIUSU’s commitment to transparency and collective decision-making.
