ACITIVIST CLUBS: MOBILIZING SUPPORT AND MAKING CHANGE

Activist clubs are organized to achieve a political goal and are not affiliated with a political party. They provide an opporunity for Students' Union members to organize on issues important to them and make change in their community.  Examples of past such clubs are Students for a Free Tibet, the Popular Participation Movement and Solutions.

Free the Children

The Free the Children (FTC) club is a student group supporting FTC campaigns and initiatives. This group originally started in 2007. Since then, we have raised funds for a school in Kenya and are currently working on raising funds for a school in Ecuador through the FTC Adopt a Village Program. The FTC Club fundraises for Adopt a Village campaigns while also raising awareness regarding local and global poverty. Along with hosting events and fundraisers on campus, the FTC club also works with local elementary and high schools to live out FTC's dedication of children helping children around the world.

Hempology 101

The VIU Hempology 101 club is an activist group dedicated to educating the public about the medicinal and industrial uses of cannabis.

Rights and Democracy Delegation of VIU

In the pursuit of human rights around the world and at home, we are  a student run club supported by a national organization whose mandate is to “work with individuals, organizations and governments in Canada and abroad to promote the human and democratic rights defined in the United Nations’ International Bill of Human Rights.” Through pub nights, conferences, film presentations, speaker series, conferences and informal gatherings we try to spread awareness, while supporting our fellow human rights activist groups on campus and in and around Nanaimo. If you are interested getting involved in our planning processes, fundraising efforts, or just in showing up at the events to support us, you can contact the email below.

SOLUTIONS: A Sustainability Network

Solutions is a growing coalition of people and organizations working toward a common vision as a catalyst of sustainable initiatives at Vancouver Island University. Questions we focus on: “how can we do more to prevent climate change than we do to cause it?”; “How can I enjoy sustainable living and have a better life?”

Student Workers Action Group

Ever felt like you have been mistreated by yoru boss? Ever unclear of what your rights are at your job? Want to know more and help make better working conditions for yourself and fellow students?
